Product Description

CZMEDITECH PLIF Peek Cage

PEEK spinal fusion cage, also known as interbody fusion cage, is used in spinal fusion surgery to replace the damaged intervertebral disc and provide an ideal environment for two vertebrae to fuse together. When the spine is affected or damaged by degenerative diseases, fusion is needed. Or an injury may cause compression of the spine, resulting in chronic pain, which usually makes people weak.

PEEK interbody fusion cage is located between two vertebrae to be fused. The cage provides optimal spacing to promote controlled bone growth. The cage can also be threaded so that the bone can grow and properly integrate through the implant. Actually, the interbody fusion cage becomes a part of the spine.

Who needs PEEK interbody fusion cage?

Although back surgery was once considered as a high-risk surgery, the success rate has increased significantly in recent years. Now, 60% to 90% of patients experience successful fusion and accompanying pain relief.

In several cases, PEEK interbody fusion cage can provide considerable relief. Some of them include:

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Degenerative intervertebral disc disease

  • Degenerative scoliosis

  • Degenerative spondylolisthesis

  • Spinal fracture

Why is PEEK the first choice for fusion cage?

Intervertebral cage can be made of several different biomaterials, including titanium, allograft or donor bone, and even carbon graphite. Polyetherketone (PEEK) is the first choice of fusion cage, which has replaced titanium in this field.

1. Bone-like modulus–-PEEK has cortical bone-like modulus. This means that PEEK bends like a bone and bears weight. The ability to bear weight like PEEK cortical bone is also important to reduce stress shielding. PEEK spinal fusion cage helps to maintain the integrity of adjacent bones.

2. Radiopermeability-In its natural state, PEEK is a material that is transparent or invisible in MRI, CT and X-ray scanning. It will not interfere with doctors' ability to read and evaluate medical images. Because positioning is very important for spinal fusion surgery, a clear medical image is necessary.

3. Biocompatibility-No biomaterial can be implanted without complete biocompatibility. PEEK has been proved in this respect, and many animal studies have also confirmed that it has no cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and immunogenicity. In fact, PEEK has passed the strictest biocompatibility test.

Future of polyetherketone spinal fusion cageIn most cases, polyetheretherketone has replaced titanium, but we are just beginning to explore the potential of this material in medicine. The research focus of PEEK spinal fusion cage is to improve the osseointegration between implant and natural bone. Several implant designs have been introduced to achieve this goal, and more are under development.
